Ryan Daniel Montgomery (July 5, 1977) is an American songwriter and rapper. He is professionally known as Royce da 5’9”. He was born in Detroit, Michigan. Royce moved to Oak Park while he was just ten years old. At the age of 18, Royce started rapping, and he was heavily influenced by The Notorious B.I.G, Esham, N.W.A, Detroit’s Most Wanted, Tupac Shakur, Redman, and Ras Kass.
Royce signed his first deal of the official music career with Tommy Boy Records in 1998. The Aftermath of Dr. Dre also offered him, but they were offering him $1 million less as compared to Tommy Boy Records; hence, it was easy for Royce to decide between the two. After the shutdown of Tommy Boy Records, Royce signed with Game Recordings and Columbia, where he started recording his first album, “Rock City.” On December 29, 1997, his manager Kino Childrey got him introduced to Eminem during a concert. They both collaborated in the form of a duo called “Bad Meets Evil.” Together they released several tracks.
Royce released his second album, “Death Is Certain” in 2004. This album is his most successful one to date. He did not stop working;, right after this mega success, Royce began working on his third solo project in 2005, entitled Independent’s Day. His other studio album includes Street Hop (2009), Success is Certain (2011), Layers (2016), Book of Ryan (2018), and The Allegory (2020). Royce has also worked in different collaborations with other artists such as Slaughterhouse, Welcome to Our House, Shady XV, PRhyme, PRhyme 2, and Hell: The Sequel.
