Rose Royce Information
Rose Royce is a Los Angeles based soul and R&B group that originated in 1973. The band plays disco, funk, R&B, and soul. The current lineup of the group includes Gwen Dickey (vocals), Kenny Copeland, Kenji Brown (trumpet, lead vocals), Lequeint "Duke" Jobe (bass), Victor Nix (keyboards), Henry Garner (drums), Freddie Dunn (trumpet), Michael Moore (saxophone), Terry Santiel (congas), and Michael Nash. Rose Royce was previously known as Total Concept Unlimited and Magic Wand.
Rose Royce worked for a film director Michael Schultz, for his picture, Car Wash. From this project, the band took its current name. The soundtrack done for Car Wash turned out to be a major success for the band. The album by Rose Royce received the Grammy for Best Motion Picture Score Album of the Year. It featured three Billboard R&B Top Ten singles: "I Wanna Get Next to You," "Car Wash," and "I'm Going Down."
Rose Royce II: In Full Bloom was a follow-up album by the band that also produced two top-10 singles entitled "Do Your Dance" and "Ooh Boy." Some of the other notable singles by the band are Strikes Again, Rainbow Connection IV, Greatest Hits, Golden Touch, Jump Street, Stronger Than Ever, Music Magic, The Show Must Go On, Fresh Cut, and Perfect Lover.
Some of the hit cover versions created by Rose Royce are "I'm Going Down" (Mary J. Blige), "Wishing on a Star" (Fresh 4 ft. Lizz E), and "Love Don't Live Here Anymore" (Morrissey–Mullen).
