Robert Cray Information
Robert Cray (August 1, 1953) was born in Columbus, Georgia; his father was stationed at Fort Benning then. Denbigh High School in Newport News, Virginia, is where Cray got his start in music. He was a member of the band The One-Way Street when he was there. The Tacoma, Washington, region became his family's permanent home. Lakewood, Washington, is the site of Lakes High School, where he went to school.
Cray decided to start a band at the age of 20 after seeing the likes of Muddy Waters, Albert Collins, and Freddie King perform live. Soon after, the group started touring West Coast college towns. He stayed in Eugene, Oregon, in the late 1970s and founded the Robert Cray Band and the Cray-Hawks with Curtis Salgado. Uncredited as the bassist for the house party band Otis Day and the Knights in the 1978 picture Animal House by National Lampoon, Cray played the instrument.
The 2005 induction ceremony for Cray took place at the Guitar Center on Hollywood's RockWalk. And Cray keeps on recording and touring. He was a featured performer at the Crossroads Guitar Festival and toured with Eric Clapton from 2006 to 2007. In 2017, Cray was honored with the Americana Music Lifetime Achievement Award for Performance, and in 2011, he was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame. In the wake of an argument with Eric Clapton about Van Morrison's "Stand and Deliver" lyrics, Cray withdrew from Clapton's forthcoming 2022 European tour.
