Rick Estrin Information
Rick Estrin (October 5, 1949) is an American harmonicist, vocalist, and songwriter from San Francisco, California. He grew up fiercely independent, when Estrin turned 10, he made his way to the tough Market Street area and made many friends within the neighborhood. Estrin received a copy of Ray Charles’ The Genius Sings The Blues by his sister that made him a fan of the artist. Some of his other early influences were albums of Champion Jack Dupree, Mose Allison, Jimmy Reed, and Nina Simone.
As a teenager, Estrin immersed himself in the urban culture that was around him. At the age of 15, he received his first harmonica, and at the age of 18, he was proficient enough to begin sitting in at clubs scattered all around the city. Estrin initially jammed with blues master Lowell Fulson and later on, quickly was hired to open five shows for R&B giant Z.Z. Hill. He used to work five nights a week for almost a year with guitar legend Travis Phillips in a band as well.
Rodger Collins was the first real musical mentor of Estrin. At the age of 19, he moved to Chicago and worked with some of the city’s best bluesmen. He has also jammed with the legendary Muddy Waters. Some of the major songwriting influences cited by Estrin are Percy Mayfield, Detroit bluesman Baby Boy Warren, and Sonny Boy Williamson II. Estrin is also a harmonicist, lead vocalist, and songwriter in the Rick Estrin & the Nightcats band.
