Raquel Cepeda Information
Raquel Cepeda is an American autobiographer, filmmaker, critic, and journalist. In "Bird of Paradise: How I Became Latina," Cepeda recalls her early childhood in great detail. She was born to Dominican parents on June 9, 1973, in Harlem. Cepeda moved to the Dominican Republic as a toddler until 1981. There, in Upper Manhattan's Inwood/Washington Heights, she lived with her alcoholic father and her Nordic stepmother.
Cepeda has been a journalist for over 20 years, covering various topics, including music, culture, fitness, politics, race, and identity, for publications like People, Time Out New York, The Village Voice, CNN, and The New York Times. Cepeda joined the staff of Russell Simmons's OneWorld magazine as its editor-in-chief in 2001. At the time, she was 28.
The feature-length documentary Bling: A Planet Rock was co-produced, written, and directed by Cepeda in 2007. Featuring Tego Calderon, a reggaeton and hip-hop superstar from Puerto Rico, and American rappers Raekwon and Paul Wall. As of March 2015, Cepeda has co-hosted a podcast titled "Our National Conversation About Conversations About Race."
