Priya Ragu Information
Tamil-Swiss is a musician and songwriter, Priya Ragu. Her parents organized musical get-togethers with other members of the Swiss Tamil community so that Priya could learn about and appreciate her cultural background. Her father started a band that played songs from Kollywood movies. She sang with her dad's band while he played tabla and her brother (Japhna Gold) handled the keys. For the sake of the people of Jaffna and Tamil Nadu, her father also encouraged her and her brother to perform Tamil songs at cultural events and weddings.
She finished high school, then relocated to Zurich, and found a job as an accountant for Swiss International Air Lines. She eventually settled into a career as a technical buyer for the airline but never stopped making music in her own time. Although she had some success singing in the shower as a youngster, her parents' rigid and traditional values prevented them from encouraging her to pursue music professionally. Her parents had a zero-tolerance policy for what they saw as filthy Western music, MTV videos, and pop songs. Even though her parents forbade her from doing so, she practiced pop tunes in her room.
In 2017, she uprooted her life and spent six months in New York City pursuing a singing career. During her short time in the United States, she could only work with her brother, Japhna Gold, a music producer. While visiting the United States briefly, she worked with her brother in Switzerland over Skype.
