PRCA - Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association Information
The PRCA, or Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, is today's biggest rodeo organization. It officially recognizes events in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, featuring artists from those nations and beyond. The National Finals Rodeo serves as the culminating event. Colorado Springs, Colorado, is home to the PRCA's headquarters. The Cowboys ' Turtle Association was born after a long "strike" that ended with Johnson caving into the Cowboys' demands.
They were dubbed turtles because, although they were sluggish to organize, they would boldly put out their necks to acquire what they needed when necessary. A woman named Alice Greenough Orr, who had won the national bronc championship four times, was one of the organizers.
About 70 people work full-time for the PRCA, but that number jumps to about 100 during the rodeo season. Built-in 1979 in Colorado Springs, the PRCA headquarters also serves as the home of the ProRodeo Hall of Fame and Museum of the American Cowboy. The PRCA was inducted into the Cheyenne Frontier Days Hall of Fame in 2006.
