Pointer Sisters Information
The Pointer Sisters is an American R&B group. The current lineup consists of Sadako Pointer, Issa Pointer, and Ruth Pointer. Genres as varied as pop, jazz, electronic, bebop, blues, soul, funk, dance, country, and rock, have all been represented in their sets. The Pointer Sisters have three Grammys and a Hollywood Walk of Fame star from 1994. Between 1973 and 1985, the group had 13 singles that peaked in the top 20 in the United States.
In 1969, June and Bonnie Pointer, who were already playing together as "Pointers, a Pair," took their act to local bars. When Anita, the singer's sibling, joined, the group was a trio instead of a duo. Many singles from their Atlantic Records contract flopped. When their sister Ruth finally joined them in December of 1972, the group of three became a quartet. A year later, in 1975, they won the Grammy for Best Country Vocal Performance for "Fairytale," which they recorded after signing with Blue Thumb Records and releasing their debut album (1974). In 1978, Bonnie departed the band and launched a solo career, which was met with moderate success.
In the 1980s, when the band comprised June, Ruth, and Anita, they saw their greatest financial success. In 1984, the songs "Automatic" and "Jump (For My Love)" both reached the top ten, earning them two more Grammys. The group's other top 10 hits in the United States include "Fire" (1979), "He's So Shy" (1980), "Slow Hand" (1981), and both the original and extended mixes of "I'm So Excited" (1984) and "Neutron Dance" (1985).
