Peter Wolf Information
Peter Blankfield is a musician best known as the lead vocalist for the J. Geils Band from 1967 to 1983. He may be better known by his stage name, Peter Wolf. Born in the Bronx, he attended the High School of Music & Art, located in West Harlem near the Apollo Theater. Later on, he moved to Boston, Massachusetts, to attend the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts on scholarship. Wolf studied painting, and his first roommate was David Lynch, a film director.
Wolf formed a group called “The Hallucinations” in 1964 along with his fellow art students Stephen Jo Bladd (drums), Joe Clark (bass), Doug Slade (guitar), and Paul Shapiro (guitar). Initially, they performed at nightclubs in the Combat Zone area of Boston. The group developed a large following as one of the first bands to perform at the Boston Tea Party. During that period, the band appeared on bills with Sun Ra, John Lee Hooker, Van Morrison, Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, and The Velvet Underground.
Wolf released his first solo record entitled “Lights Out” in 1984, produced by Michael Jonzun of the Jonzun Crew. The album featured Maurice Starr, Elliot Easton, Mick Jagger, Yogi Horton, Elliot Randall, G.E. Smith, and Adrian Belew. Other notable studio albums by Wolf include Comes as You Are (March 20, 1987), Up to No Good (February 19, 1990), Long Line (May 14, 1996), Fool’s Parade (September 19, 1998), Sleepless (September 10, 2002), and Midnight Souvenirs (April 6, 2010).
