Sergei Prokofiev composed the music for "Peter and the Wolf" in 1936. A children's narrative is told, and the orchestra plays a "theme" for each character to depict what the storyteller is saying. It is not only one of the most performed pieces of classical music but also the most performed piece of Prokofiev. Natalya Sats, the artistic director of Moscow's Central Children's Theatre, approached Prokofiev in 1936 and asked him to compose a symphony just for young audiences.
Prokofiev had been acquainted with Sats after taking his sons to see performances at her theater. The goal was to familiarize kids with orchestral instruments. The first version of the libretto focused on Peter, a Young Pioneer (the Soviet equivalent of a Boy Scout), who confronts an authority figure to remedy a mistake. While Nina Pavlovna Sakonskaya [ru] (actual name Antonia Pavlovna Sokolovskaya, 1896-1951) was a prominent children's novelist then, Prokofiev was not pleased with the rhyming text she wrote.
Peter snares a wolf in Prokofiev's revised version. The plot shows Soviet themes such as the intransigence of the un-Bolshevik elder generation (the grandfather) and the victory of Man (Peter) taming Nature while also encouraging desirable Pioneer traits such as vigilance, boldness, and ingenuity (the wolf).
