Michael Alden Hadreas (born September 25, 1981) is an American musician. He is best known as Perfume Genius, his stage name. Hadreas' song touches on various subjects, including sexuality, his battle with Crohn's illness, domestic abuse, and the risks gay men face in today's culture. Hadreas is of Greek heritage and was born in Des Moines, Iowa, before relocating to the Seattle suburbs when he was 6 or 7 years old. Hadreas received piano lessons as a kid and studied art in school.
On June 21, 2010, Hadreas' debut album, Learning, was released on Turnstile Records in Europe and Matador Records in the United States. Hadreas' house was used to record several of the recordings for Learning. The album was met with immediate praise, with Pitchfork giving it an 8.2 out of 10 ratings. He played his debut live concert at Seattle's Vera Project, opening with A Sunny Day in Glasgow.
Hadreas' second album, Put Your Back N 2 It, was released on February 20, 2012. Hadreas' music was praised by music reviewers and fans alike for achieving a sense of aural intimacy. YouTube declared the album's promotional video, which featured Hadreas and pornographic actor Arpad Miklos hugging each other, unfit for family viewing.
Hadreas released his third album, Too Bright, on September 23, 2014, to great acclaim, co-produced by Adrian Utley of Portishead and Ali Chant. Hadreas toured the album after its release, playing sold-out headline performances. Perfume Genius performed "Queen" on The Late Show with David Letterman on October 30, 2014.
