Paul Lewis Information
Paul Lewis (May 20, 1972) is an English classical pianist. He was born in Liverpool, United Kingdom. When Lewis first started learning an instrument, the cello was all his school could afford to teach him. He was accepted to Manchester's Chetham School of Music when he was 14 years old, and it was then that his piano playing took off. Lewis's ties to the Wigmore Hall in London are very deep.
Between the 2005 and 2007 seasons, Lewis toured the United States and Europe performing all 32 of Beethoven's piano sonatas with his full recording of the cycle for Harmonia Mundi. Each of these CDs has been selected as an "Editor's Choice" by Gramophone, and in August 2008, volume 4 of the series won "Best Instrumental" and "Best Recording of the Year" honors from the magazine. Lewis made history in July and August of 2010 when he played all five of Beethoven's concerts in a single season of The BBC Proms.
Since 2015, he has co-directed the Leeds International Piano Competition with conductor Adam Gatehouse, previously serving under Fanny Waterman. He presided over the judging panel as well. In the 2016 Birthday Honours, Lewis was honored for his contributions to the world of music by being named a Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Paul Lewis obtained Irish citizenship in 2021.
