Patricia Lee Smith is an American singer, musician, and poet. She was born on December 30, 1946, in Chicago, Illinois. In 1964, she graduated from Deptford Township High School. In 1969, Smith went to Paris and started busking and doing performance art. She performed in a play “Cowboy Mouth” in 1971. She wrote many poems, including “Sam Shepard: 9 Random Years (7 + 2) and "For Sam Shepard.”
Patti Smith released her first album, Horses, in 1975. Radio Ethiopia, Easter, Wave, Dream of Life, Gone Again, Peace and Noise, Gung Ho, Trampin', Twelve, and Banga are some other famous albums by Smith.
Smith gave her performance during the American Museum of Tort Law convocation ceremony held on September 26, 2015. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the news program “Democracy Now” in 2016, she performed "People Have the Power" at Riverside Church, Manhattan. At the age of 64, she made her television acting debut on the TV series Law & Order: Criminal Intent.
Patti Smith is renowned for her collaborative, imaginative interpretations and musical ventures. This creativity is demonstrated in haunting and striking covers of songs by other musicians such as "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (Nirvana), "Words of Love" (Buddy Holly), and "When Doves Cry" (Prince). "Because the Night" is one of her famous collaborations, which ranked no.5 in the U.K. chart and no. 13 on the Billboard chart in 1973.
Smith won the National Book Award for her memoir “Just Kids” on November 17, 2010. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007. Her songs "Glitter in Their Eyes" and 1959" were nominated for Grammy Awards for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. In 2010, Pratt Institute gave her an honorary doctorate in fine arts. That same year, Rolling Stone ranked her no.47 among their 100 Greatest Artists. She is the only winner of the 2011 Polar Music Prize.
