Once - The Musical Information
The musical Once is based on John Carney's 2007 film of the same name. Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová composed the music and lyrics for the movie, as well as the Oscar-winning song "Falling Slowly." Enda Walsh wrote the musical's lyric book. The musical had its world premiere in 2011 at the New York Theatre Workshop before moving to Broadway in 2012.
The play was nominated for eleven 2012 Tony Awards; eight awards—including Best Musical, Best Actor, and Best Book—were given to the production. The musical also took home the 2013 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album and the 2012 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical. Since then, it has given rise to a London production, and on October 1, 2013, a North American Tour began. The cast of the musical doubles as the orchestra. A bar is in the middle of the stage, and chairs are arranged on the left and right sides.
Cast members leaving the stage merely move to the side and take a seat. From these chairs, they perform as the orchestra. The bar serves as a working bar for theatergoers before the performance and during intermission. The musical then started performing in previews on Broadway at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on February 28, 2012, and it went on stage for the first time on March 18. The Off-Broadway cast members' performances by Kazee and Milioti were repeated, and John Tiffany directed the production.
