Newsies - The Musical Information
Harvey Fierstein wrote the musical Newsies, which has music by Alan Menken and words by Jack Feldman. The musical film of the same name, released in 1992, was based on the actual Newsboys Strike of 1899 in New York City; the screenplay for the film was written by Bob Tzudiker and Noni White, and Fierstein converted it into the script for the show. After making its 2011 debut at the Paper Mill Playhouse, the musical debuted in 2012 on Broadway and played over a thousand performances before going on tour.
From March 15, 2012, during previews, to March 29, 2012, officially, the musical debuted on Broadway at the Nederlander Theatre for a limited engagement. Newsies was announced by Disney on May 16, 2012, as an open-ended engagement. Following the initial sneak peeks, the engagement was extended until August 19, 2012.
The musical's planned 2022 London opening was announced on February 21. Matt Cole's all-new immersive in-the-round production, set to premiere at the Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre in November 2022 with an official opening on December 8, was announced on March 8, 2022. July 30, 2023, was the final day of production.
