New World Symphony Information
New World Symphony is a musical conservatory in Miami Beach, Florida, United States. This organization was founded in 1987 as a training ensemble for young musicians interested in pursuing careers as classical music professionals. Founder of Carnival Cruise Lines, Ted Arison, helped Michael Tilson Thomas launch the New World Symphony in 1987. Thomas and Arison shared a dream of creating a professional orchestra that would serve as a training ground for recent music school grads.
On February 4, 1988, in Miami, the New World Symphony performed for the first time. Arison had given the charity $62 million US dollars by his death in 1999. The New World Symphony's fellowship program is a three-year commitment that provides participants with numerous opportunities to perform and learn in local and international settings. Fellows in the program are given the freedom to plan and perform their concerts, at which they frequently perform unusual or rarely performed works for unusual instrumentation.
In addition to teaching in local schools, opportunities are provided for practicing auditions, managing finances, and interacting with donors and the media. From September through May, the New World Symphony performs in the New World Center's 756-seat concert hall. Concerts range from those featuring the entire orchestra to those featuring smaller groups or soloists.
