Napoleon Murphy Brock Information
Napolean Murphy Brock (June 7, 1945) is an American flute player, saxophonist, and singer. In the 1970s, he worked closely with Frank Zappa, contributing to albums like Apostrophe ('), Roxy & Elsewhere, One Size Fits All, and Bongo Fury. Songs by Zappa which he sang prominently include "Village of the Sun," "Cheepnis," and "Florentine Pogen." Brock started his music career in the late '60s in the San Francisco South Bay Area with a band he called "Communication Plus," which featured seven and eight musicians.
He was responsible for the band's R&B-influenced rock vocals, songs, and arrangements. He was also a talented saxophone and flute player. He performed at venues like Gary R. Schmidt's The Odyssey Room and The Brass Rail. In the early '70s, he was found by Zappa's road manager while performing with a dance band in Hawaii. Brock was persuaded to become the band's main singer by the presence of George Duke and Jean-Luc Ponty.
Among Brock's many collaborations with Zappa is his portrayal of the "Evil Prince" on Thing-Fish. He has shared the stage alongside George Duke, Captain Beefheart, and most recently, Neonfire. He still appears there regularly. Brock and Project/Object have strongly supported The Paul Green School of Rock Music, an after-school music program, for many years. Brock appeared in the 2005 documentary Rock School based on that organization.
