Najee Information
Jerome Najee Rasheed (November 4, 1957) is an American smooth jazz flutist and saxophonist. He was born in the Lower West Side of Manhattan in New York City. While he was in grade school at the age of eight, his musical pursuits already begun. He used to play the clarinet but had a desire to play the saxophone as well. Najee’s mother used to songs of legendary American jazz artists such as Miles Davis. Becoming a professional jazz musician was a big decision of his life that changed almost everything.
After becoming a jazz musician, Najee then shifted his inspiration towards saxophonists Charlie Parker, Yusef Lateef, John Coltrane, James Galway, Hubert Laws, Joe Henderson, Ronnie Laws, and Grover Washington Jr. He officially started his career as a teenager, performing in the New York City area for the local bands. Najee went on to his first world tour after finishing high school with a band named “Area Code” from New York City.
Najee released his debut album named “Najee’s Theme” under the record label named “EMI/Capitol.” This album brought him initial success and earned him the Grammy Award nomination for Best Jazz Album. His sophomore album “Day By Day” was released in 1988. The album went platinum immediately. Again in 1992, Najee released another album called “Just an Illusion.” The album was produced by several producers, including Fareed, George Duke, Arif Mardin, Wayne Brathwaite, and Marcus Miller.
Najee has released several studio albums so far in his career. Some of them are; Share My World, The Smooth Side of Soul, Mind Over Matter, You, Me and Forever, The Morning After, A Musical Journey.
