Moonspell Information
Moonspell is a Portuguese gothic metal band. The group's current lineup consists of Hugo Ribeiro, Aires Pereira, Richardo Amorim, Pedro Paixao, and Fernando Ribeiro. After operating under the moniker "Morbid God" from 1989 until 1992, when the promotional tune "Serpent Angel" was released, the band changed its name to Moonspell. Anno Satanae, the band's demo, was published on February 24, 1993. It featured three tracks and an introduction and ending.
First playing outside of Portugal in July for three performances in the UK, Moonspell set out on a European tour in September to support Morbid Angel. Duarte Picoto informed the band that he couldn't join them on their European tour due to personal difficulties; however, the band decided to go forward as a five-piece anyway. Moonspell's latest studio album, named Extinct, came out in 2015. The darker, more gothic sound that Moonspell has been exploring with this album continues.
They dropped a concept album titled 1755 on November 3, 2017. It told the tale of the Lisbon earthquake of 1755 and was performed almost entirely in Portuguese, except for a few choirs singing in Latin. Moonspell's original drummer, Mike Gaspar, announced his departure on July 3, 2020, and Hugo Ribeiro was introduced as his replacement. The new Moonspell album, Hermitage, is out on February 26, 2021.
