Milonga Information
Originating in the regions around the Ro de la Plata in Argentina, Uruguay, and the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul; milonga is a type of tango dance music. The tango owes much to this dance. The tango milonga is an upbeat habanera. The original habanera had a typical two-four pulse pattern in which each note was emphasized. But the tempo increased when the song evolved into milonga, and all four notes became forceful.
One-two-three (four), one-two-three (four) gives milonga an almost waltz-like feel due to the power of the first beat compared to the fourth. (four). The habanera is a slower, racier version of the standard 1-2-3-4. One contemporary tango pianist attributes the milonga's increased tempo to the polka.
Composer and legendary Payadore Gabino Ezeiza said that African rhythms like candombe were the inspiration for the milonga, and historical records show that Afro-Argentines in Buenos Aires at the turn of the twentieth century were avid fans of the Argentine milonga. Tango developed as many musical styles and dancing techniques were incorporated over time.
