Mike Mattison Information
Mike Mattinson is an American vocalist and musician. He was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Jazz, the blues, and Americana-rooted music all impressed him. Mattison's childhood friend Paul Olsen, a native Minnesotan, encouraged him to try songwriting and performance. The two connected during a Parliament-Funkadelic show 1993 and started performing R&B and blues together soon after. Mattison decided to further his education at Harvard University, so he and Olsen packed up and headed east.
English and American literature was Mattison's focus at Harvard, where he earned his degree. Mattison and Olsen kept performing as a pair, now calling themselves Scrapomatic. When Derek Trucks, a blues rock artist, needed a new lead vocalist for his band in 2002, he turned to Craig Street and John Snyder, two record producers with financial ties to Trucks.
Trucks, who was in New York City at work, ran into Mattison on the metro after seeing his images and listening to his singing recordings online. After this encounter, Mattison joined The Derek Trucks Band and played in several of their shows. Soon after that, he was an integral part of the group. But he's still a part of Scrapomatic; the duo is The Derek Trucks Band's go-to opener.
