Memphis Symphony Information
The Memphis Symphony is an American orchestra based in Memphis, Tennessee. The primary performing venue for the orchestra is the Cannon Center for the Performing Arts. It was established in 1939 by Burnet C. Tuthill, head of the music department at Southwestern College. The society consisted of amateur musicians largely who offered four or five concerts each season.
The first concert by the Memphis Sinfonietta was a chamber orchestra consisting of 21 musicians. The concert took place at the Goodwyn Institute. They gained huge success with their subsequent concerts with DeFrank as the first music director. The orchestra received a grant from Ford Foundation in 1963 that helped the orchestra expand its season and its audience base.
DeFrank remained a music director for the orchestra until 1984 and was later replaced by Alan Balter until 1998. He worked a lot for the Memphis Symphony Orchestra and, in 1998, was replaced by David Loebel until 2010. Robert Moody was named as the new principal conductor for the orchestra in October 2015. He is the current music director for the Memphis Symphony Orchestra and earned this elevation in March 2017.
