May Erlewine Information
May Erlewine (May 13, 1983) is an American musician. Her music reflects various musical styles, including folk, bluegrass, blues, rock, and roll. It evolved from her upbringing as a homeschooled, musically immersed youngster and an adolescent hitchhiking around North America to play in clubs and on street corners. Erlewine has explained that her music is an outlet for her inner thoughts and feelings. She lives in Northern Michigan, where she spends many months a year composing and performing original music.
The New England band Rani Arbo and Daisy Mayhem recorded one of her songs, "Shine On," on their 2007 CD Big Old Life. The 2014's Old Fashioned featured her rendition of "Joy," co-performed with novelist Ralston Bowles, on its original soundtrack. Singer Sawyer Fredericks, who ultimately won NBC's The Voice in 2015, sang "Shine On" in the show's final round. Ironically, Earthwork Music member and singer-songwriter Joshua Davis made it to the final round of that season's The Voice.
Erlewine is included in the 2016 songbook Rise Again, a follow-up to the wildly successful folk music parody book Rise Up Singing, which also features chords, lyrics, and sources. Rise Up Singing, originally released on May Erlewine's 2007 album Mother Moon, and Shine On, originally released on May Erlewine's 2005 album Seth & May, which she recorded with her then-husband Seth Bernard, are both featured in this expanded edition.
