Max Alfred Elliott is a British reggae vocalist of Jamaican descent. He was born in Lewisham, London. In addition to the music of Dennis Brown, John Holt, Ken Boothe, and Gregory Isaacs from Jamaica, Priest was raised on the music of Marvin Gaye, Al Green, the Beatles, Phil Collins, and Frank Sinatra. As a teenager, he helped the Jah Shaka and Negus Negast sound systems move heavy speaker boxes. Sometimes, his tunes sound more like R&B or pop than reggae.
After starting to perform on the Saxon Studio International reggae sound system in South London, Priest released a few singles on his label. Together, his cover of Cat Stevens' "Wild World" and the release of his debut studio album Maxi (named Maxi Priest in the US and Canada) in 1988 cemented his position as one of the most prominent British reggae singers of the time.
Along with UB40, he is the only other British reggae outfit to have a number-one single on the American Billboard charts (with 1990's "Close to You"). In 1991, their duet "Set the Night to Music" with Roberta Flack was a Top 10 hit in the United States. As a duo with Shaggy in 1996, "That Girl" reached the Top 20 in the US. Towards the end of his musical career, Priest favored collaborations with established and emerging artists.
