After a leave of absence while serving as a Program Officer at the National Science Foundation (NSF), Dr. Mark S. Hurwitz has returned to Western Michigan University. During his time at NSF, his responsibilities covered the entire agency. His principal programs were the Office of Advanced Cyberinfrastructure's Learning and Workforce Development and the Directorate for Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences' Law and Science.
Hurwitz also handled Working Groups on Navigating the New Arctic, Cyberinfrastructure for Emerging Science and Engineering Research, Cyberinfrastructure for Sustaining Scientific Innovation, Science of Broadening Participation, and Disrupting Operations of Illicit Supply Networks.
Justice System Journal, American Review of Politics, American Political Science Review, State Politics & Policy Quarterly, Law & Policy, Judicature, Review of Policy Research, American Political Science Review, and Political Research Quarterly are among the prestigious journals that have published Hurwitz's research.
With a grant of $418,000 from the National Institute of Justice, U.S. Department of Justice, Hurwitz served as co-principal investigator for the WMU/Cooley Law School Innocence Project, which used DNA evidence to exonerate wrongfully convicted individuals.
