Mark Eitzel Information
Mark Eitzel (January 30, 1959) is an American musician. He was born in Walnut Creek, California. Eitzel was raised in a military household, so he moved about as a kid. He spent time in Okinawa, Taiwan, Ohio, and the United Kingdom. He first arrived in the US in 1979 and declared his sexual orientation publically in 1985. While still a teenager in Southampton, England, he began his musical career. When he was 19, he relocated to Columbus, Ohio, and formed his first band, a punk outfit called the Cowboys. There was only one single from them, and it came out in 1980.
His second group, The Naked Skinnies, only released a song in 1981. After forming the band The Naked Skinnies in 1980, he relocated to San Francisco in 1981. In 1982, Eitzel established American Music Club (AMC) in San Francisco. For a whole dozen years, the band played shows and recorded music. While active with AMC, Eitzel frequently made solo albums and sang with San Francisco's Toiling Midgets. After the American Music Club breakup in 1994, Eitzel pursued a solo career, releasing 60 Watt Silver Lining the following year.
Eitzel also contributed to the 1996 AIDS fundraising album Offbeat: A Red Hot Soundtrip by the Red Hot Organization. After this, in 1997, he released West, which featured a collection of songs written in collaboration with R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck, with whom he also toured. With the help of Steve Shelley from Sonic Youth and James McNew, the bass guitarist for Yo La Tengo, he released the albums Caught in a Trap and I Can't Back out 'Cause I Love You Too Much, Baby.
