Mariachi Vargas De Tecalitlan is a Mexican folk ensemble. It is mariachi music founded by Gaspar Vargas in 1897. The ensemble has been working under the artistic guidance of Ruben Fuentes since 1950. The current lineup of the group consists of Manuel Alcaraz, Carlos Martinez, Jorge Martinez, Jorge Aguayo, Miguel Angel Barron, Daniel Martinez, Andres González, Alberto Alfaro, Gustavo Alvarado, Gilberto Macias, Arturo Vargas, Enrique De Santiago, and Julian Martinez.
From 1975, the musical direction of Mariachi Vargas was the responsibility of Don Jose “Pepe” Martinez through 2013-2014. Currently, the ensemble is operating under Carlos Martinez. The ensemble has been in its 5th generation since 2003. Their latest recordings include “Penas, Desengaños... Y Amores”, “Sinfonico II”, “Sinfonico I”, and “5ta Generacion”. The ensemble’s music ranges from classical works to traditional songs. They also play popurris that amazes their audience everywhere.
Mario Vargas has been one of the most popular writers for Mariachi Vargas. The ensemble has produced more than recordings from 1937 to 2009. The contents of their recordings included cumbias, huapango, polkas, popurris, waltzes, and Huastecos sones.
