Maria The Mexican is an American based hybrid of Mexican Rock and folklore influenced by traditional Mariachi music. Maria Elena Cuevas and Teresa have performed with Marachi Estrella that was founded by their grandmother Teresa Cuevas in 1970. The band is known as one of the first all-female mariachi bands in the country. Maria Teresa Alonzo Cuevas is also considered a pioneer in the Hispanic musical community flourishing in the 1980s. Unfortunately, it was struck by tragedy when four of the seven members were killed in 1981 in the Hyatt Skywalk Collapse.
After recovering from that tragedy, Teresa began to teach her grandchildren the Mariachi music, and they helped keep her love for the music alive. Teresa and Maria started to explore some other genres as well in 2000. Both of them simultaneously co-directed Mariachi Estrella. The fusion of today’s Maria The Mexican music is mixed with a touch of rock n’ roll, funk, soul, and blues that is enhanced by the musical sounds and knowledge of Garrett Nordstrom. Maria The Mexican rocks out in the English and Spanish with a host of emotion. Their albums include South of the Border Moonlight (2016) and Moon Colored Jade (2013).
