William Henry Marcus Miller Jr. is an American producer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist. He was born in Brooklyn, New York. Miller plays the clarinet, piano, saxophone, and guitar and has extensive training in them. Soon he played bass and composed songs for jazz flute Bobbi Humphrey and keyboardist Lonnie Liston Smith in New York City. Miller eventually started playing in studios. Miller cites James Jamerson and Larry Graham as two of his first musical influences.
Miller worked in the studio session band for around 15 years, arranging and producing. Between 1979 and 1981, he played in the SNL band. "Jump To It," a hit for Aretha Franklin, was written by him and Luther Vandross. Michael Jackson, Beyoncé, Mariah Carey, Eric Clapton, Herbie Hancock, and countless more have all included his bass playing on their albums.
Miller released the albums Suddenly (1983) and Marcus Miller (1985) to launch a solo funk/R&B career in the mid-1980s (1984). In addition to being the primary music creator for these albums, he played a significant role in producing and performing the majority of the instruments himself. Since then, he's released eight more solo albums, on which he occasionally performs vocals.
