Marcus Johnson Information
Marcus Johnson is an American jazz musician, entrepreneur, and producer. He was born in Columbus, Ohio but later moved to Washington, D.C. with his family. Johnson grew up listening to a variety of music but choose jazz for his future career. He has also incorporated the rhythms of rap with R&B along with jazz into his music. Soon he found himself learning both traditional and contemporary jazz musicians such as Thelonious Monk and Joe Sample. As a teenager, Johnson started an auto-detailing company. He also played in a jazz band at Montgomery Blair High School. Later on, he attended the University of Miami and earned a bachelor of arts degree in music at Howard University, and completed an MBA from Georgetown University.
Johnson released his first jazz album entitled Lessons in Love during his time at Georgetown University. The album was released independently in 1997. In the same year, he released another jazz album entitled Inter Alia. These initial releases topped the best-seller charts at Tower Records stores in Washington. Soon he attracted N2K Encoded Music, now known as N-Coded Music, and signed a contract. Chocolate City Groovin’ was his next album released through the newly signed label.
Johnson established Marimelj Entertainment Group, Inc. while studying at Georgetown. It is a production company and a music publishing firm. “The Urban Groove” is the blend of contemporary jazz, alternative, and R&B music churned by the firm. Three Keys is another independent music publishing company founded by Johnson. The company was initiated as a local record label.
On January 17, 2015, Johnson earned the Samuel A. Halsey Award from his alma mater, Georgetown University. He was nominated for an NAACP Image Award in 2010 and the Washington Area Music Association’s WAMMIES in 2013.
