Marcia Ball Information
Marcia Ball (March 20, 1949) is an American blues singer and pianist. She was born in Orange, Texas, and raised in Vinton, Louisiana. Ball has been described by USA Today as a “sensation, saucy singer, and superb pianist.” Ball was born into a musical family, due to which music had a special place in her heart. She started taking piano lessons when she started school. Ball showed such an early interest in New Orleans-style piano playing, exemplified by James Booker, Professor Longhair, and Fats Domino.
Ball went to Louisiana State University in the 1960s to study English. In 1970, when she was 21 years old, Ball started a progressive country band named Freda. She formed another band named Firedogs in Austin, Texas. Her piano style includes elements of Louisiana blues, swamp blues, and zydeco. In the 1980s and early 1990s, Ball began her recording career as a solo artist after signing a record deal with Rounder Records.
Ball released an album on the Rounder Records in January 1998 entitled “Sing It!” The album was nominated for a Blues Music Award and Grammy Award in “Best Contemporary Blues Album.” In 1998, she also received the Blues Music Award for “Best Blues Instrumentalist-Keyboards” and “Contemporary Female Vocalist of the Year.”
Marcia Bell has released several notable albums as a solo artist, including Shine Bright (2018), The Tattooed Lady & The Alligator Man (2014), Roadside Attractions (2011), Peace, Love & BBQ (2008), and JazzFest Live (2007).
