Manhattan Transfer Information
Manhattan Transfer is a New York City-based jazz vocal group founded in 1969. This Grammy award-winning jazz vocal group was created by Tim Hauser and named after the novel by John Dos Passos. There have been two editions of the Manhattan Transfer, but Tim Hauser was the only person to be a part of both. The second edition of the group was created in 1972. It consisted of Hauser, Alan Paul, Janis Siegel, and Laurel Massé. The current line-up of the band consists of Alan Paul, Janis Siegel, Cheryl Bentyne, and Trist Curless. The original group consisted of Marty Nelson, Pat Rosalia, Hauser, Erin Dickins, and Gene Pistilli. The genre of the group is defined as Vocal jazz, a cappella, vocalese, swing, and pop.
The first edition of Manhattan Transfer created the album Jukin' (Capitol, 1971), which played jazz music, rock, and country genre of the past, unlike the later incarnations of the group. The band was not picked up by the Capital records for their second album and broke up in 1973. The second version of the Manhattan Transfer began playing in clubs in New York City. The new group worked on a demo to present to Ahmet Ertegun at Atlantic Records, which was a success. It was later released as a debut album as The Manhattan Transfer (Atlantic, 1975).
The album was followed by Coming Out 1976, The Manhattan Transfer Live 1978, Extensions 1979, The Best of The Manhattan Transfer 1981, Bodies and Souls 1983, The Christmas Album 1992, The Manhattan Transfer Meets Tubby the Tuba1994, Man-Tora! Live in Tokyo 1996, Boy from New York City and Other Hits 1997, though the list goes on.
