Man of La Mancha Information
In 1965, the musical Man of La Mancha premiered, featuring music by Mitch Leigh and lyrics by Joe Darion. The novel, by Miguel de Cervantes in the 17th century, inspired Wasserman's 1959 non-musical teleplay I, Don Quixote. There's a play within a play as Cervantes and his fellow inmates act out the tale of the "crazy" knight Don Quixote while they wait for their day in front of the Spanish Inquisition.
Neither Cervantes' life nor Don Quixote are shown in this book, nor is that claim made. There was a recurring theme in Wasserman's criticisms: the work was being misunderstood as a musical adaptation of Don Quixote. Five Tony Awards, including "Best Musical" and the original 1965 Broadway production, ran for 2,328 performances. It is one of the most popular musicals ever, having been recreated four times on Broadway.
The show's signature song, "The Impossible Dream," has become an industry staple. Productions of the musical have been staged in many other countries around the world in a wide variety of languages, including Dutch, French (Jacques Brel's translation), German, Hebrew, Irish, Estonian, Japanese, Korean, Bengali, Gujarati, Uzbek, Bulgarian, Hungarian, Serbian, Slovenian, Swahili, Finnish, Chinese, Ukrainian, Turkish, and nine different dialects of Spanish
