Makana Information
At the age of seven, Makana started singing, and by the time he was eleven, he had taken up the 'ukulele and was learning the native Hawaiian style of slack key guitar. Makana, a student of slack key guitar greats like Bobby Moderow Jr. and the late maestro Uncle Sonny Chillingworth, has devoted his life to preserving and further developing this authentically Hawaiian art form. Makana's dynamic "Slack Rock" style draws from Slack key but incorporates bluegrass, rock, blues, and raga.
Guitar greats like Metallica's Kirk Hammett and Spain's legendary flamenco guitarist Pepe Romero have praised Makana's skills. Released in 1999, his first album, "Makana," won the Hawaii Music Award for Best World Music Album. The albums "Koi Au" (2002) ("A landmark musical statement" - Star-Bulletin) and "Ki Ho'alu: Journey of Hawaiian Slack Key" (2003) followed. Later that year, Makana was nominated for a Grammy for his work on the "Hawaiian Slack Key Kings I & II" CDs.
Different Game, his debut album of original material, was released in 2008. Venus and the Sky Turns to Clay, an instrumental compilation celebrating his 20 years in the music industry, was released in 2009. His most recent album, 2013's Ripe, was sponsored by fans via Kickstarter's crowdfunding website. Ron Nevison and Mitchell Froom served as producers, and keyboardist, composer, and arranger Jeff Bova worked on the album's arrangements.
