Mad Professor Information

When Fraser was a kid, he got the nickname "Mad Professor" because he was obsessed with technology. At the age of 13, he moved with his family from Guyana to London, where he worked as a service technician before pursuing a career in music. Slowly but surely, he amassed a collection of recording and mixing gear, and in 1979, he opened his four-track recording studio in his Thornton Heath house under the name Ariwa Sounds. After relocating to Peckham in 1982 with an eight-track system (eventually growing to sixteen), he began recording artists for his label.

John Peel was a big fan of Fraser's and played music from his Dub Me Crazy albums frequently. Reggae fans were slow to embrace new music until the mid-1980s, when artists like Sandra Cross, Johnny Clarke, Peter Culture, Pato Banton, and Macka B released albums to widespread acclaim. In South Norwood, Fraser established the largest black-owned studio complex in the UK, where he produced hits by Cross, John McLean, and Kofi in the style of lovers of rock and attracted Jamaican musicians like Bob Andy and Faybiene Miranda. In 1983, he worked with Lee "Scratch" Perry for the first time on the album Mystic Warrior (1989). Joe Ariwa, Fraser's son, produces dub in his father's honor.
