Mac Arnold Information
Mac Arnold (June 30, 1942) is an American blues musician. He was born in Ware Place, South Carolina. Early in his career, he played in a band called J. Floyd & the Shamrocks, which featured a young James Brown. In 1966, Arnold joined Muddy Waters' band after moving to Chicago the previous year and working with A.C. Reed. Arnold is featured on Muddy Waters - Authorized Bootleg, a live performance from November 1966 released in 2009. In 1967, he formed the band the Soul Invaders and quickly found employment as a backing band for artists such as B.B. King, The Temptations, Little Milton, and many more.
Mac played bass on several classic blues albums in the 1960s, including Otis Spann's The Blues Is Where It's At and John Lee Hooker's Live At Cafe Au Go Go. After relocating to California in the '70s, he started playing in various session jobs. Arnold's signature bass line is easily recognizable in the Sanford and Son theme.
In addition to his other TV duties, he was a member of the Soul Train band for four years. Arnold started his restaurant in Greenville, South Carolina's old West End, in 2013, where he has held his annual Cornbread and Collard Greens Blues Festival since it first gained popularity in 2014. After being nominated for induction into the Alabama Blues Hall of Fame, he opted to focus again on music and close the restaurant in August 2017.
