Lyfe Jennings Information
Lyfe Jennings, whose real name outside the stage is Chester Jermaine Jennings is an American singer and songwriter specializing in R&B and soul genres of music. He is also an instrumentalist and a record producer. Jennings has been described by the New York Times as a “socially minded R&B singer.”
He was born in Toledo, Ohio. Jennings started performing in a group that went by the name ‘The Dotsons’ comprising of him, his brother, and two cousins. They went for a few shows in the early 90s before disbanding, and later, Jennings began finding himself on the wrong side of the law. He then found himself in jail at the age of 14.
He was released 10-years later in 2002, and two days from his release, he recorded four demo CDs. A month later, he was performing at the Apollo. Interestingly, he was being booed as he walked onto the stage, but a few into his performance, the crowd went silent and started listening. They then went all out in praises of him.
He managed to sell about 1,000 copies of his four-song demo CD at the Apollo event. Following his growing success, Jennings decided to move to New York in pursuit of a major label deal. The first to draft him a contract was Columbia Records, who went on to release his debut, Lyfe 268-192, in 2004.
In 2005, the album was reissued and a bonus of the track Hypothetically featuring Fantasia. He later released the albums The Phoenix (2006), Lyfe Change (2008), I Still Believe (2010), Lucid (2013), Tree of Lyfe (2015), and 777 (2019).
