Luke Winslow-King (March 12, 1983) is an American lyricist, composer, singer, guitarist, and multi-instrumentalist. He was born in Cadillac, Michigan. At a young age, Winslow-King picked up the guitar, and later, in middle school, he took up the French horn. He was a regular at the local church. At 14, he began performing regularly at McGuire's Resort in Cadillac with his band, the Luke Winslow-King Blues Band. Winslow-King studied bebop jazz guitar at the Interlochen Center for the Arts, where he earned a degree in 2001.
Winslow-King went to school in Kalamazoo, Michigan, at Western Michigan University in 2002. 2003 he enrolled at the University of New Orleans to study music composition and theory. He also took up classical music study while he was there. Winslow-King received an ambassador scholarship to study Czech music at Charles University in Prague for the summer of 2003, so he spent the summer there.
After only one semester at Western Michigan University, Winslow-King left school in the fall of 2002 to embark on a cross-country tour performing the music of Woody Guthrie under the name "From California to the New York Island" with musicians Seth Bernard and Daniel Kahn. In New Orleans, a car and the band's instruments were taken from a parking spot on Ursulines Street in the Tremé neighborhood.
