Lowest of the Low Information
The Lowest of the Low is a Canadian alternative rock band. The current lineup of the group consists of Michael McKenzie (guitar), Greg Smith (bass), David Alexander (drums), Lawrence Nichols (vocals, keyboards, and harmonica), and Ron Hawkins (vocals and guitar). Members of the band Popular Front Ron Hawkins, Stephen Stanley, and David Alexander, came together to start the band as a side endeavor while their former band was experiencing internal conflicts that ultimately resulted in its dissolution.
Shakespeare My Butt, their debut CD, was made available by Page Publications in 1991. The songs on the record were ones they had already performed live over years of touring as Popular Front. Along with references to Marxism and the Spanish Civil War, Hawkins' songs frequently made mention of Don River, Bathurst Street, and his neighborhood bar, "The Only," on Danforth Avenue.
The band entered a distribution agreement with A&M Records in 1993, and Hallucigenia was published in 1994. They started early work on their follow-up album and went on tour to promote it, but later that year, the band split up due to creative and professional conflicts. Before starting Ron Hawkins and the Rusty Nails in 1996, Hawkins released a solo album called The Secret of My Excess.
