Kelly and Harmony first collaborated on Chrisette Michele's Epiphany album in 2009. After that, they worked together to compose and produce songs for artists like Rihanna, Bruno Mars, Britney Spears, Mary J. Blige, Kelly Clarkson, Jessie J, and Miley Cyrus. Louis York was created because its members were tired of writing songs for others and wanted to make music that better reflected their values.
Claude Kelly is from New York City, and Chuck Harmony is from East St. Louis, so those two cities inspired the group's moniker. Kelly sings, and Harmony plays keyboards, guitars, percussion, and the vocoder; together, they develop and produce all of the music. Louis York calls their work "world music" in the sense that it draws from a variety of genres and an international feel, citing their participation in church choirs, upbringing in the R&B genre, and exposure to Jazz and the Motown sound as children as inspiration.
Releases on their Weirdo Workshop imprint by artists like Louis York are being handled through Sony's RED Distribution. The Weirdo Workshop is a "multi-purpose creative hub" run out of a house in Franklin, Tennessee, where the duo records albums, plots out new endeavors, and arranges events, including book clubs, talks, and concerts.
