Los Angeles Negros Information
Los Angeles Negros, or The Black Angels, are a pop ballad band from San Carlos de Chile, Chile, that was founded in 1968. Singer German de la Fuente, guitarist Mario Gutiérrez, pianist Jorge González, bassist Miguel "Nano" Concha, and drummer Luis Ortiz were the band's most well-known members.
The band's original lineup consisted of three high school students and an employee. They produced their debut single, "Porque Te Quiero," in June of 1968 after winning a local competition. It caught the attention of the Odeon Records officials in Chile, who convinced two of the band's four members to record an album with three additional studio musicians.
After the departure of De la Fuente, several band members formed new bands with similar titles, such as Germaín y sus Ángeles Negros and Los Ángeles de Chile. Mario Gutiérrez, the guitarist, has carried on with his band, Los Angeles Negros. Hip-hop artists like Funkdoobiest, Damian Marley, the Beastie Boys, and Jay-Z have sampled songs by Los Angeles Negros and performed them on stage alongside Celia Cruz, Raphael, and José Luis Rodriguez.
For the original 1969 release of Y Volveré, the band members De la Fuente, González, Concha, and Ortz confirmed their reunion in February 2009. Their record label, EMI, described the occasion as "unprecedented."
On February 14, 2010, they reunited at the Teatro Caupolicán for the first time since 1972. However, due to "economic issues" right before a performance at Santiago's Sala SCD music venue in February, the reunion didn't happen until March of that year.
