Elizabeth Clark Phair (April 17, 1967), professionally known as Liz Phair, is an American songwriter-singer known for her honest, explicit, and blunt lyrics about relationships and sex. She was born in New Haven, Connecticut. Phair was adopted at her birth. She was raised in the Chicago area primarily. In 1990, she attempted to begin her musical career in San Francisco, California, right after graduating from Oberlin College but couldn’t get much success. Hence, she returned to her home in Chicago. In her hometown, she started to self-release her audio cassettes under the name “Girly-Sound.”
Liz Phair released her debut album in 1993 by the name “Exile in Guyville” that got critically acclaimed. The album has been ranked by Rolling Stone as one of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Right after her debut album went successful, Phair released her second album in 1994 named “Whip-Smart.” The album brought her some major success, and she received the nomination during the Grammy Awards for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. Later, her third studio album, “Whitechocolatespaceegg” was released in 1998.
Ten years past, Liz Phair released her fourth studio album “Liz Phair” in 2003 under Capitol Records. Her single from the album “Why Can’t I” did so well and peaked at number 32 on the Billboard Hot 100. She left Capitol Records after releasing her fifth album “Somebody’s Miracle” in 2005, she released her sixth album “Funstyle” independently in 2010. She has won a few awards in her career including BMI Pop Awards, Spin’s Readers’ Poll Awards, ASCAP Pop Music Awards, and a few more. Phair has also been nominated for the Grammy Awards.
