Leslie Mendelson, a singer-songwriter based in Brooklyn, is touring in support of her latest studio album, "If You Can't Say Anything Nice..." and her solo acoustic EP, "In The Meantime," of which were recorded during the aforementioned lockdown in 2020. Prior albums by Leslie Mendelson, including her Grammy-nominated debut 'Swan Feathers' from 2009 and her most recent 'Love & Murder' from 2017, focused on romantic themes.
But when it came time to write the songs that would become "If You Can't Say Anything Nice...", she and her writing partner Steve McEwan set out to investigate the anxiety resulting from the current socio-political climate. It includes tracks like "Medication," "I Need Something To Care About," and "Would You Give Up Your Gun." Leslie and Jackson Browne's 2019 duet "A Human Touch," from the documentary film 5B, is a natural progression from their more socially concerned stance on that track.
If it were his sole collaboration with a renowned performer, Leslie Mendelson's work with Jackson Browne would be something to be proud of. Not only did classic rock legend The Who invite Leslie to open two gigs at Madison Square Garden last year, but Grateful Dead's Bob Weir recorded a duet with her on Roy Orbison's staple, "Blue Bayou." They had scheduled three more shows for 2020, but the epidemic forced them to cancel them. The fact that some of rock music's most credible figures have sought Leslie out demonstrates the rarified artistic atmosphere she occupies.
