Leo Nocentelli Information
Leo Nocentelli spent his formative years in the Irish Channel and Seventh Ward areas of New Orleans. His father strongly supported his decision to become a musician. He picked up the ukulele at a young age and the guitar when he was in his twelfth year. The jazz guitarists Charlie Christian, Barney Kessel, Johnny Smith, and Kenny Burrell influenced him.[3] At the age of thirteen, he had his first paid job. At the tender age of fourteen, he was already performing with Otis Redding and Clyde McPhatter.
He was able to perform a variety of jazz, Dixieland, R&B, and rock styles. He became well-known as a guitarist after joining the Hawketts. When he was only seventeen, he began working as a session musician for Motown groups like the Supremes, Temptations, and Spinners. In 1964, he was drafted and served in the army for two years. He worked as a studio musician in New Orleans on his leave. Following his time in the military, he joined Art Neville and the Neville Sounds, a seven-piece group that had just formed.
In 1968, Nocentelli, Art Neville, George Porter, and Ziggy Modeliste were the band's four members. The band's style was fluid; each member's instrument could take the music in their desired direction. Six nights a week, clubgoers could hear the band play danceable rhythm and blues at Ivanhoe. Nocentelli, Porter, and Modeliste regularly gave jazz performances on Sundays.
