Lee Ritenour Information
Lee Mack Ritenour is a jazz guitarist, producer, composer, and musician from Los Angeles, California. Ritenour began playing guitar at the age of eight. Four years later, he decided to pursue a career in music. At the age of sixteen, he had his first recording session with the Mamas & the Papas.
Ritenour developed some deep love for jazz, and he was highly influenced by guitarist Wes Montgomery. When he turned seventeen, Ritenour began working with Lena Horne and Tony Bennett. He also studied classical guitar at the University of Southern California.
Ritenour started his solo career in 1976 when he released the album First Course, stated to be a good example of the jazz-funk sound of the 1970s. The album was followed by Journey (1978), and Feel the Night (1979). He also played "uncredited rhythm guitar" on "One of My Turns," along with one of Pink Floyd's heaviest rock numbers, "Run Like Hell."
Some of his other major hits include "Is It You" with vocals by Eric Tagg, Rit/2 (1982), Banded Together (1984), On the Line, Harlequin, with Dave Grusin, Larry & Lee, with Larry Carlton, This Is Love, World Of Brazil, Smoke 'n' Mirrors, Amparo, with Dave Grusin, 6 String Theory, Rhythm Sessions, and A Twist of Rit.
As a sideman, Ritenour played with B.B. King - King Size (1977), Barbra Streisand - Songbird (1978), Barry Manilow - Even Now (1978), and many more artists. He won the 1985 Grammy Award for Best Arrangement on an Instrumental and had several other nominations.
