Larry Carlton Information
Larry Eugene Carlton (March 2, 1948) is an American guitarist from Torrance, California, who began taking guitar lessons at six. Carlton developed his interest in jazz music after hearing guitarist Joe Pass on the radio. Some of his other favorite guitarists are Wes Montgomery, Barney Kessel, and legendary blues guitarist B.B. King. He attended junior college and later went to Long Beach State College, where Carlton professionally played football at Los Angeles clubs.
Carlton found steady work as a studio musician during the 1970s. He appeared in several recording sessions with Linda Ronstadt, Michael Jackson, Steely Dan, Joni Mitchell, Quincy Jones, Bobby Bland, Sammy Davis, Jr., Dolly Parton, Andy Williams, the Fifth Dimension, Herb Alpert, Christopher Cross, and Paulinho Da Costa.
In 1981, Carlton performed on "Theme from Hill Street Blues" by Mike Post, and the next year, he appeared on The Nightfly by Donald Fagen, who was the lead singer for Steely Dan. As a solo artist, Carlton recorded his debut album in 1968, entitled With a Little Help from My Friends.

Carlton won the 1981, 1987, 2001, and 2010 Grammy Awards for Best Pop Instrumental Performance.
