Kobo Town Information
Drew Gonsalves, a Canadian-Trinidadian singer and songwriter, are at the helm of the Juno-winning Canadian Caribbean music ensemble Kobo Town. Since forming, the band has performed at numerous international music events in the Americas, Asia, and the Caribbean. Independence, the band's first album, was released in 2007. There were CFMA and Indie award nominations for the album.
In 2013, the band released their second studio album, Jumbie in the Jukebox. On June 13th, 2013, the album was included in the list of longlisted nominees for the 2013 Polaris Music Prize. Additionally, the record was shortlisted for a JUNO Award that same year.
Gonsalves worked with Calypso Rose on the writing and production of their platinum-selling album, Far From Home, after the success of their previous album, Jumbie in the Jukebox. Winner of a French Victoire de la Musique in February 2017, the CD comprises numerous songs written by Gonsalves and performances by other members of Kobo Town.
At the 13th annual Canadian Folk Music Awards, the album Where the Galleon Sank by Kobo Town took home the prize for World Group of the Year. A 2018 Juno Award for Best World Music CD was given to the album.
