Knoxville Information
Knoxville is a theatrical musical featuring Frank Galati's script, Stephen Flaherty's music, and Lynn Ahrens' lyrics. Based on James Agee's book A Death in the Family, which landed a Pulitzer Prize for Fiction upon its 1957 publication, the musical is The story's location in Knoxville, Tennessee, where original author Agee was from, lends the title. The period of the show is 1915.
The program was revealed on February 6, 2019, with Claybourne Elder performing in New York City at a musical reading. Originally set to open in Asolo Repertory Theatre in Sarasota, Florida, in the spring of 2020, these plans were shelved. Galati developed the proposal and hired Ahrens and Flaherty's music team to assist with show construction.
The performance was postponed almost two years till 2022, when it was confirmed to be included in Asolo's 2022–2023 schedule. April 23 until May 11, 2022, marked the international debut. Josh Rhodes coordinated the program. Months following the international premiere of the project, Galati passed away on January 2, 2023. September 2024 saw the first university performance of the musical presented at the Clarence Brown Theatre by the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
