Kirk Whalum Information
Kirk Whalum is an American jazz musician and songwriter from Memphis, Tennessee. His music is classified as pop, smooth jazz, gospel, and R&B. He used to sing in his father’s church choir and was born into a family of musicians. Whalum attended Melrose High School and later went to Texas Southern University. At school, Whalum was a member of the renowned Ocean of Soul Marching group.
Kirk Whalum performed at Jean Michel Jarre’s giant concerts Rendez-Vous Lyon and Rendez-Vous Houston in 1986. He later recorded a duet with Jevetta Steele and Jevetta Steele, entitled “Love Is A Losing Game,” released in 1993. Kirk has also worked on many film scores such as Boyz n the Hood, The Bodyguard, The Prince of Tides, Grand Canyon, and Cousins (film).
Kirk Whalum released many notable studio albums since 1985. Some of the most renowned ones are Floppy Disk (1985), And You Know That (1988), The Promise (1989), Caché (1993), In This Life (1995), Into My Soul (2003), Roundtrip (2007), Promises Made: The Millennium Promise Jazz Project (2008), and Romance Language (2011).
His Gospel According to Jazz Series – Live includes The Gospel According to Jazz: Chapter I (1998), Chapter II (2002), Chapter III (2010), and Chapter IV (2014). Kirk was the inaugural Jazz Legend honoree of the National Museum of African American Music on June 20, 2014.
