Kingston Trio Information
The Kingston Trio is a pop and American folk music group that was founded in 1957 originally as a San Francisco Bay Area nightclub act. The original lineup of the band consisted of Dave Guard, Bob Shane, and Nick Reynolds. The Kingston Trio is famous for aiding the launch of the folk revival of the late 1950s to late 1960s. In 1958, the trio released their self-titled debut album. "Tom Dooley" was the hit recording included in this album that sold more than three million copies as a single track.
The Kingston Trio earned a second gold record for the LP, "...from the Hungry i (live)." The first two releases by the trio earned several awards and made the band popular when no one knew about the folk music category in the Grammy scheme. The trio released many notable studio albums, Live albums, and singles. Some of these included Stereo Concert (live), Here We Go Again!, The Last Month of the Year, College Concert (live), The Kingston Trio (Nick Bob John), Once Upon a Time (live double album), The World Needs a Melody (The New Kingston Trio), Live! At the Historic Yuma Theater (live with DVD), and many more.
Some of the notably selected compilations by The Kingston Trio are The Best of the Kingston Trio, The Best of the Kingston Trio Vol. 2, The Patriot Game/Tell It On The Mountain, The Lost Masters 1969-1972 (The New Kingston Trio), though the list goes on. In total, the trio released nineteen albums that made Billboard's Top 100; out of this 100, fourteen ranked in the top 10, and 5 hit the number 1 spot.
The Kingston Trio earned many awards and honors. Most notably, two Grammy Awards, Grammy Hall of Fame Award induction, Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, Vocal Group Hall of Fame induction, Hit Parade Hall of Fame induction, Billboard Award.
